Things I happened to stumble upon while surfing aimlessly

My friend Amrut Abhyankar offered these excellent insights in the new trend in Bollywood “Items Songs”. Here are this thoughts in his own words:

There are 3 special songs of recent movies having a solid impact on the entire country may be. The first is “Munni Badnam Hui” from “Dabang”.

The second is “Darrrrling…” from “Saat Khun Maaf”.

The third is “My Name is Sheela” (popularly known with its 2nd line “Sheela ki Jawani”). I am very much impressed with My Name is Sheela in all respect. Its composition, speed, English-Hindi blend and Katrina kaif’s dance with full frenzy. She otherwise is not at all attractive. But in this song she has created a haunting effect.

These types of songs really started with a song “Main aayi hoon UP Bihar Loot Le”from “Shool” with Shilpa Shetty dancing surrounded by thugs from Bihar. But didn’t make much of an impact beyond being significantly noticed by masses. The real starter was “Beedi Jalaile…” from “Omkara”, with Bipasha Basu making a terrific seducing effect with her dance.

Few decades back such songs were performed by side artists such as Padma Khanna, Helan, Bindu and so on. These artists were known as Cabaret Dancers. And there was lot of scope for hypocrites to enjoy in dark in the theatre and ridicule in open forums. These days top heroines are eager (the best Marathi word - there is ahamahamika between them) to perform for such songs known as ‘Item Song’ and the performer - “Item Girl” and it is liked and appreciated by one and all, becoming a selling feature for the film.

In Marathi film a similar song has come “Jau dya na ghari, aata vajale ki bara…” from “Nataranga”. The tune and the speed is worth watching/listening.

Acceptability of such songs with action and the meaning, once considered as vulgar, is so deep and widespread that a child is encouraged if not pushed by parents to sing or at least dance on any of such songs in school competition, annual gathering or in realty show on TV – an ultimate achievement for the parent.

The next item song, people are eagerly waiting is performed by the Item Girl - Dipika Padukone in the film “Dum Maro Dum” – to be released soon.

Taste and so the types of songs have undergone a sea change, still classical music prevailing in many modern movies quite significantly.

Watch Vidya Balan singing Lalat in film “Ishqiya” - quite an unusual film - could be copied from some English one. One wonders if Madhuri Dikshit Nene will also fall in line.
